Ok so I felt like such an outsider, like I shouldn't be at this thing cause I'm not a full Mexican. But it was fun. And it opened my eyes up to some people that I don't think about that often. Basically here's a snippet of part of the weekend: Screaming cheers that went like "Que Vive tu Familia-QUE VIVE!" and my ultimate favorite "Si se puede" Then there was the culture show. That consisted of Latin bands speaking only in Spanish (damnit) and Salsa dancers, and pan dulce and aqua fresca during intermission. There were tamales for dinner with, of course, beans and rice, There were many many many many speeches given about how great it is to be a latino, and how lucky we are to represent are people at Cal, then there were many other speeches given about how we have to help "our gente" and fight against the immigration laws, which I actually want to do, and if you'd like to join me I'm skipping May 1st to go and protest at Cal. There were some really cool parts, like Cesar Chavez's sister and nephew came and spoke and handed out awards at this ceremony we went to, I know that his sister didn't do anything amazing, but it still gave me chills to be in a room with one of his family members. Then there was an exciting surprise protest..very berkeley. Basically the Chancelor came to speak and then as he was leaving some students told him to come back, and then they said to stand up if you believed in social justice, and I mean of course you had to stand, because if you didn't that's basically like admitting you have no heart, and then some of the kids who were doing the Raza program, like me, just whipped out this letter asking for hire wages for the custodians, and it turned into a bit of a screaming battle, with chants of "promise, promise, promise" and then some lady grabbed the mic and asked everyone to sit down saying that she liked what we were fighting for but it really wasn't the time. Anyways that was kind of exciting. Basically the weekend was exciting but I felt like basically what a white person would feel like sitting in on a black panther party meeting. I've never just hung out with latinos and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, no one forced me to speak spanish, or questioned why I was there, and overall I'm really glad I went. well adiosos.

Cesar Chavez's niece came with us to El Salvador, and she said when not in public, her uncle, Cesar Chavez, was kind of a jackass. Still a great guy though, and I respect what he did for immigrant farmers.
